Start Max Havelaar
Max Havelaar startte in 1988 op verzoek van koffieboeren in Mexico. Ontwikkelingshulp door de verkoop van producten in de reguliere supermarkt, met het Keurmerk als middel. Het doel stond voorop, dus de prioriteiten van Stichting Max Havelaar lagen aanvankelijk vooral bij het krijgen van de producten in het winkelschap. Bedrijven en winkels interesseren voor het initiatief, maar tegelijkertijd voldoende aanbod verzekeren van goede kwaliteit.
De nadruk bij de boeren lag op begeleiding: steun bij de exportlogistiek, de kwaliteit van het product, minimumeisen van de administratie, de procedures binnen de organisatie, het wegnemen van onbegrip tussen importeurs en boerenorganisaties, enzovoort. Het middel, het keurmerk met alle eisen van dien, kwam in die eerste jaren op de tweede plaats. Stichting Max Havelaar stelde samen met boerenorganisaties en betrokken importeurs de regels van het Keurmerk op, de stichting controleerde, begeleide en adviseerde.
